SEArED in association with the Arcola Theatres stages the first major London revival of Dennis Potter's most controversial play. Renowned for being banned before transmission by the BBC, Brimstone and Treacle's glimpse into suburban paranoia, xenophobia and insularity is as revealing and relevant today as it was in the 1970s. North London, Summer, 1977. As a nation prepares to celebrate Queen Elizabeth's Silver Jubilee, a middle-class, middle-aged couple struggle to come to terms with the incapacitation of their daughter following a hit-and-run car accident. Out of nowhere, an apparently respectable young man arrives on their doorstep to change their lives forever... A twisted allegory about fear, faith, morality, and the incomprehensible randomness of good and evil. Brimstone and Treacle was written for television by Potter in 1976 as part of the Play for Today strand. However, it was withdrawn before transmission, and not broadcast until 1987. In 1977 Potter adapted it for the stage and it premiиred at Sheffield Crucible. Dennis Potter (1935-1994) was a television dramatist, screenwriter, director and journalist. His best known works include The Singing Detective, Pennies from Heaven, Lipstick on your Collar and Blue Remembered Hills. Rupert Friend plays Martin Taylor. Brimstone and Treacle sees Friend return to the stage following his West End debut in 2010 with The Little Dog Laughed (Garrick Theatre). His
film work includes Five Days of War, Lullaby for Pi, The Kid, Chйri, The Young Victoria, The Boy in Striped Pyjamas, Pride and Prejudice and The Libertine. Matti Houghton plays Pattie. For theatre, her work includes `Tis Pity She's a Whore (Liverpool Everyman), Ditch (Old Vic Tunnels), The Caucasian Chalk Circle, Kinderstransport (Shared Experience), Antigone (Royal Exchange Manchester) and Kebab (Royal Court). Her television credits include Law and order UK, Pulse, Luther, Wire in the Blood and After Life. Tessa Peake Jones plays Mrs Bates. Her theatre credits include The Five Wives of Maurice Pinder (National Theatre), Crossing the Equator (Bush Theatre), The Park (RSC) and Ring Around the Moon (Bristol Old Vic). For television, her credits include Marchlands, Poppy Shakespeare, Waking the Dead, The Lost World, Fish, A Summer in the Suburbs, Birth Deaths and Marriages, Tom Jones and Only Fools and Horses. Ian Redford plays Mr Bates. For theatre, his work includes The Gatekeeper, Faustus, Antigone (Royal Exchange Manchester), Love the Sinner (National Theatre), Six Degrees of Separation (Old Vic), All My Sons (Curve Leicester), Helen, Romeo and Juliet (Shakespeare's Globe) and The Permanent Way (Out of Joint). For television, his credits include The Legend of Boogeyman 4, Henry VIII ­ The Mind of a Tyrant, The Devil's Whore, The Chase, Party Animals, Animals, Missing, William and Mary; and for film, She Stoops to Conquer, Trial By Fire, Remains of the Day, Just Like a Woman and Three Men and a Little Lady. Amelia Sears directs. Her credits include The Last Five Years (Duchess Theatre) and Pedestrian (Bristol Old Vic, Underbelly and national tour). Sears was Resident Staff Director at the National Theatre in 2007/2008, has worked extensively alongside Katie Mitchell internationally, and as Associate Director to Michael Grandage on Twelfth Night (Donmar West End), Iain Glen on Ghosts (Duchess Theatre), and at the Royal Court. SEArED is the creation of London-based actor Alex Waldmann (RSC, National, Donmar, Almeida, Cheek by Jowl, BBC). Founded in 2010, SEArED is an independent theatre production company dedicated to the development and facilitation of work that is provocative, politically conscious, and, above all, entertaining. SEArED seeks to bring brand new, original writing to life and resurrect neglected classics; to work in partnership alongside established organisations whilst forging unexpected links with talent from across the arts. Recent projects include co-producing the world premiere of Rose by Hywel John starring Art Malik and his daughter Keira at the 2011 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and Tom Wainwright's Pedestrian, a co-production with Bristol Old Vic. Rare Reading Wednesdays SEArED will host a series of post-show readings of other stage plays by Dennis Potter with specially invited guests, in a desire to introduce the prolific screenwriter's lesser known body of theatre work to a wider audience. These events will take place on 9, 16, 23, 30 May (reading will be post show, starting at 9.45pm). There will also be Post Show Discussions on 14 and 28 May.
