Scientific Realism scientific explanations tell us about how the world actually is. Realism about Quantum mechanics: "By a `realist version of quantum mechanics', I mean one that takes the theory to be aimed at providing a true description of a world independent of us as observers"(Ney 2010, 5.). A Specific Realist Claim: "on any straightforward ontological reading of quantum mechanics, the theory requires the existence of an object, the wavefunction, that inhabits an extremely high-dimensional space: configuration space. And this, combined with the fact that quantum theory is as well justified as a theory can be, gives us at least prima facie reason to believe that we inhabit this extremely high-dimensional space"(Ney 2010, 3-4).

Platonism Platonism: Musical works are abstract types, of which performances, scores, and recordings are tokens. Simple Platonism: Musical works are eternal types (sound structures) (Kivy 1987, Dodd 2000). Complex Platonism: Musical works are indicated types that are "performing means" "sound structures" ("S/PM structure-as-indicated-by-X-at-t") (Levinson 2011).

Diamonds have the power to scratch glass. The power to scratch glass is contributed by the property of hardness held by the individual diamond.

Diamonds The very particular relations of alignment and bonding of carbon atoms is such that they form a lattice-like structure in which the individual atoms have the characteristic power of causing other atoms to remain in a relatively constrained location even under high temperatures and forces. As a result, the diamond is extremely hard, since it is difficult to change the relative positions of its constituents (Gillett 2002, 4).

Interlevel Mechanistic Composition Interlevel Mechanistic Composition: higher level wholes are composed of lower level parts. Higher level individuals are constituted of lower level individuals. Diamonds are constituted of carbon atoms. Higher level properties are realized by lower level properties. The diamond's property hardness is realized by the lower level (carbon atom) property of "being tightly bonded". Higher level powers are comprised of lower level powers. The diamond's power to scratch glass is comprised of the lower level (carbon atom) power to "hold other carbon atoms in a lattice-like structure under intense pressure".
