FOREWORD
W hen I was approached by the editors to write this foreword, I was overwhelmed. The status o f veterinary surgery in India has been changing trem endously since my active tim es in the profession. A lthough a few books have been written abroad on large animal surgery, ruminants have got little attention. M oreover, these books do not take into account the buffalo and camel and, therefore, the inform ation on these species remains fragm ented and thus great disadvantage to clinicians. C onsidering that veterinary surgery in India is more centred around ruminants, a book of this kind was long overdue. It is not an easy task to write a book o f this kind in our circum stances. Lack o f funds and pooled literature facilities is a great handicap. I am pleased to go through the contents o f this book w hich have covered diversified topics like fluid therapy, antimicrobial therapy, electrocardiography, physiotherapy and diagnostic radiology, specifically applicable to ruminants, in addition to surgery of various system s. Comparative anatomical considerations and a number of illustrations and photographs have added to the quality and usefulness of the book. I sincerely hope that the editors will keep revising this book to include advancements made and to update the contents regularly so that the students, field veterinarians and teachers continue to be aware of latest developm ents. The contents of the book are such that not only it should serve as a textbook but also as a reference source for postgraduate students, teachers and scientists engaged in the field o f veterinary surgery. This book indeed is an excellent com pilation of information. I congratulate the editors and contributors for writing a book of this magnitude and scope.

PREFACE We have ventured to write this textbook with the hope of providing useful inform ation to veterinarians engaged in surgery o f dom esticated ruminants. Although written prim arily for students and veterinarians o f developing countries yet veterinarians o f Other Countries can use it as a reference source. The nature o f clinical practice in most Asian countries differs from that of other countries. Apart from cattle, sheep and goats; the w ater buffalo and cam el are other livestock species encountered in day to day practice o f veterinarians. T he aim o f this book is to provide inform ation relevant to these species. W ith the overall advances in animal sciences, veterinary surgery has not remained merely an application of scalpel. Physiological implications influence the skill and clinical endeavours of a surgeon. A lot of differences exist in the physiology o f monogastric animals and ruminants. In order to provide an effective treatment, a surgeon must understand the pathophysiological changes that may be involved. Students and veterinariaas o f developing countries fail to acquire books on various subjects required for an integrated knowledge and surgery of ruminants. Hence information on body fluids and fluid therapy, antimicrobial therapy, physiotherapy, electrocardiography, neoplasm s and diagnostic radiology has also been included in this book. Anatomical considerations have been included, wherever necessary. A number of illustrations and pho tographs have been incorporated to make the text more meaningful. Illustrations are the handiwork of professional colleagues and undergraduate students. Since the photographs were collected from various sources, some of these may not be o f good quality. The text is based on the inform ation available in the accessible literature and experience o f the contributors and editors. References are listed at the end o f each section or chapter. It was not easy to trace the trend or incidence o f the surgical diseases o f the camel because of lack o f reports from field veterinarians. Most reports in the literature originate from teaching institutes where only a small population o f cam els is able to reach for treatm ent. Therefore, apart from screening the data available in the literature and at Haryana Agricultural University, one of us (Jit Singh) travelled through a great stretch of camel belt o f Rajasthan (India) to gather inform ation from camel-m en and field veterinarians. The inform ation gathered has been distributed to various chapters. W ith nearly 40 contributors solicited from various regions of India (Dr. A rnold w as kind enough to respond from the U .S.A .), it has not been an easy task to com pile the text and to incorporate support m aterial, specially as a first attem pt. We are conscious of our limitations and chances do exist for a num ber of errors and omissions. Yet efforts were made to avoid duplications and to maintain clarity. To revise the book in the future and to m ake it more useful, a feedback by the readers is very important. We solicit the readers to address their valuable suggestions to Jit Singh. R.P.S.
